Achieved Stage 4 Carbon Allowance as project target
The South Cambridge Science Centre (SCSC) is a cutting-edge research and development facility in Sawston, just six miles from Cambridge city centre. The first phase will deliver a three-storey, 145,000 sq ft building with parking for 269 cars and 225 bicycles, set for completion in early 2025. A second phase will add a further 45,000 sq ft, reinforcing Dales Manor Estate as a key life sciences hub.
Designed to meet the growing demand for high-quality, flexible lab space, the development will operate as Net Zero Carbon, targeting BREEAM 'Excellent' and an EPC rating of 'A'.
Mainer Associates is proud to support Bowmer & Kirkland (B&K) as the project's Whole Life Carbon consultant. Our role included delivering a comprehensive Whole Life Carbon Assessment (WLCA), using our in-house web app, CarbonCentric. CarbonCentric played a pivotal role in facilitating supply chain engagement through centralising material and emissions data, ensuring the targeted carbon intensity of 876 kgCO₂e/m² was achieved.
“To our knowledge, no other building in the Cambridge market has higher environmental standards than SCSC. Given the requirement for world-class yet affordable laboratory space in the area, we anticipate high demand for SCSC, which will be available for occupation in around 16 months in early 2025 and we are in early discussions with several organisations who recognise the need to move early to satisfy their growth ambitions. We are also developing designs for the next phase of development and would envisage submitting planning shortly.”
